About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word meaning "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes Toto a household name across the globe.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band release Mindfields and embarks on an extensive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members appeared on stage at once. The band broke up after this. Toto returned for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all original Toto members were on stage together in over 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
